Through Geography, we aim for all pupils to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, as well as their place in it. We seek to inspire curiosity about the world and its people to promote the pupils’ interest and understanding of diverse places and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.

Geography is taught in blocks throughout the year. Teachers have identified through our long term plans the key knowledge that needs to be taught in each topic and consideration has been given to ensure progression across topics through each year group. Throughout each topic, children are taught the key vocabulary to ensure that they have a strong basis to learn from. At the beginning of each topic, children are able to convey what they know already as well as what they would like to find out. This informs the programme of study and also ensures that lessons are relevant and take account of children’s different starting points. Teachers think carefully about how pupils will be supported in order to achieve to the best of their ability.

The local area is utilised to achieve desired outcomes, with opportunities for learning outside of the classroom.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) follows the ‘Development Matters in the EYFS’ guidance which aims for children to develop an ‘Understanding of the World’ through broad exploration of the following aspects; People and Communities, The World and Technology.
